MEN'S PERM IN NEWCASTLE
The perming procedure
The hair is washed and wound onto the perm rods. It is then treated with a perm lotion that softens the hair. When the hair has developed it is rinsed and treated with neutralizing lotion. Finally, the rods are removed the hair is rinsed and the hair is curly. In total, the procedure takes approximately 2 hours.
Nicholas Mark Hairdressing is a Newcastle city centre salon with a 40% male clientele. Stylists Dalton and Aki are experienced in perming men's hair.
How long must the hair be for a perm?
As a rough guide for a tight curly perm hair must be at least 3 inches long. For a loose wavy perm hair must be at least 10 inches long.
How much does a perm cost?
In most cases if you are only perming the top of the hair it should be £70 and with a haircut it should be £94. Please note that sometimes the hair needs to be cut after it has been permed for it to sit right. If you are perming all the hair e.g. top, sides and back it should be around £90 and with a haircut it should be £114.

Can you colour or highlight hair after a perm?
If the hair is going to be coloured, it should be done at least two weeks before or two weeks after the perm.
If you have previously coloured your hair please note that this treatment can sometimes make the colour fade.
Is a perm for all hair types?
We generally do this treatment on healthy hair. In most cases, we will not be able to offer this treatment to clients who have had an all-over bleach application, high-lift tint, bleach highlights or have relaxed their hair. It is also not suitable for hair that is damaged. If you would like to book a free consultation please phone us on 0191 2619651. Alternatively, you can book a free consultation online.
How long does a perm last?
If you choose to go for a soft wavy perm, then after the first couple of shampoos the curl may drop by up to 30%. After this, with a soft perm, the hair will gradually become less curly and can lose up to 80% of the wave.
Most men with short hair get their hair cut every 5 - 6 weeks. With a combination of some of the permed hair being cut off and the soft curl dropping there will be just a small amount of wave left on the ends. Because of this most men who prefer to have a soft wave usually perm their hair approximately every 12 weeks.
If you have long hair you may choose a soft perm to get the beachy wavy look but have in mind that you can very quickly lose up to 80% of the wave.
If you choose to go for tight curls, you will find that your perm will tend to be longer-lasting and will usually last up to a year.
Is it safe to perm a childs hair?
At our salon clients must be 16 years or older to have a perm. Children's skin is more sensitive and can become easily irritated. Children's hair is also more delicate and can be easily damaged even with gentle perms.
Are men's perms back in style?
Yes, men's perms are back in fashion, and in 2024 some men are having a full head of curls, white oters are only perming the hair on top and cutting the sides short. The fashion ranges from a tight curly texture on top to a few soft waves.
I have straight hair but would like a "curly top" hairstyle, is a perm what I need?
Yes, if you have naturally straight hair and would like to achieve a curly top hairstyle then a perm is what you will need. Also the sides will need to be cut short.
How often will I need to redo the Perm?
You can come in to have it done again when your new growth is at least 3 inch long which is approximately after 6 months.
How long does a perm take to do?
It usually takes approximately 2 hours.
How long should you wait to wash your hair after a perm?
Please do not shampoo or get the hair wet for 3 days.
Will I still need to use a diffuser?
Some people like to attach a diffuser to dry their hair to avoid disturbing the curl. If you have time you can simply wash your hair and let it air dry without the need to use a diffuser.
Is there anything I should not do with my hair after it's permed?
You should not colour your hair for at least 14 days after having the perm. To avoid splashing the hairline with water. You can also keep your hair dry by wrapping it in a towel when having a bath or shower.
Does perming damage hair?
Perming can be damaging if the product is left on the hair for an excessive amount of time or if it is applied to hair that has been sensitised e.g. through previous colours, perms or heat damage.
I had an allergic reaction the last time I had a perm/chemical Hair Straightening. Will it be safe to have a perm?
Perm lotions and chemical Hair Straightening treatments both contain very similar ingredients which mean there would be a very high risk of you having another allergic reaction to this treatment and so we would not be able to do this service for you.
